Week 3 and (hopefully) only one more to go!

Hey kids! I missed everyone last week! Sorry this kitchen renovation is taking over MY LIFE (and house) literally… there is DUST and kitchen stuff EVERYWHERE!

The past week was spent mainly doing annoying little things around the kitchen, i.e. paincv ting, some painting, and more painting! I needed to get most of it done before the counters arrived… and they came 3 days early!

We ended up ordering Ikea’s butcher block counters in oak, AND the farmhouse sink! Let me say I LOVE THEM!!! The counters were SO easy to install… literally 4 cuts and we were done! The most time consuming part was attaching them from inside the cabinets! (I bought an impact drill two days too late!) The sink on the other hand… well let’s just say it involved an unplanned trip to PA Ikea last Sunday! (thanks Big!)

If you missed the Week One Update make sure to see it here! Especially the before photos!

Drumrollll …

Here’s the progress (with plenty left to do…)

The shelves were put up and stained! These babies will hold a few toddlers… seriously! Big even installed LED under cabinet lights for me! One strip under the bottom shelf and some over the stove!

I put in the “marble” desk! This was so much fun! I’ve never really faux finished anything… I hear “faux finish” and I run screaming…so 90’s!!! Believe me we had MORE than one sponge painted room in our house growing up! (I loved it, mom!) But, I saw a couple posts here and here about beautiful “faux marble” painted counters and thought, I can DO (try to) that!

I must have watched this video 100 times before attempting this!

For MDF and leftover paint I’m pretty proud of it!

I got really impatient while waiting for paint to dry… LITERALLY, so I brought 2 of the semi-dry doors up from the basement and “tested” them out! I could FINALLY see my vision coming together… except one thing…

I HATED THE CABINET HARDWARE!

1. They didn’t match

2. The pulls felt very cheap

3. The knobs were way too light

SOOOOO, I ordered ALL new hardware from Home Depot… thanks MARTHA!

I painted the back entry way cabinets and re-grouted the tile floor and then something AH-mazing happened!

IKEA CALLED!!!

(to schedule a delivery)

but still… it was exciting!

I called, and they said the could deliver them on FRIDAY! That meant I had the WHOLE weekend (and Mr Big) to work on the kitchen!

First thing we did was the counters!

OMG they make me so happy!

I scoured the blogosphere for the BEST way to finish the countertops… Everyone had an opinion… most people said to use Waterlox… only thing is I HATED the fact that they looked like a bowling lane. WAY too shiny for what I wanted. Some said to use mineral oil (yeah, like the laxative mineral oil), but I settled for Tung Oil… and they look stunning! 2 coats and they are polished looking and waterproof!

Then… this happened…

We won’t go into detail… but THANK GOD Big was willing to spend almost all of Sunday driving back and forth to Ikea in PA!

A few short hours later and we had a brand new baby! (yes I am now referring to my sink as a baby)

This sink is HUGE! I measured, and then measured again before ordering, and I knew it would fit, I just wasn’t thinking it was this big! I’m not saying I’m upset… because I LOVE IT! It’s so big in fact, I had to order another faucet! It came today!

The pendant lights also came on Friday so we put those up and rewired the ceiling… it was a longer process than anticipated… (Big was so frustrated) not having the right tools is always a risk while DIY-ing…

After they were up, (and worked) we started the ceiling!

This was trickier than we thought… DAMN UN-square room and walls!

This was just 1/4 inch mdf that I had cut down into 4″ strips at Home Depot… (I feel like they were annoyed that I asked… but did it anyway)

Yesterday I filled the holes, caulked, primed, and painted the “beams”… took FOREVER!

I did take small breaks, and hung up some cabinet fronts, the new bamboo roman shades, and added the drawer hardware!

Yeah! So there you have it! Week 3 progress! I am saving the backsplash for last but after that the only thing left to do is build the island! Hopefully a week or so left!
